Marshall Petty
Marshall Petty started his musical journey in the sixties playing guitar and singing Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers and Coasters hits with teenage buddies called the Rockaways.
Marshall studied music at Bluefield State College. At Bluefield he played with famous bands that performed at the college and the Bluefield Auditorium. They were artists like James Brown and The Famous Flames, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Fontella Bass, The Coasters, Solomon Burke and Gary US Bonds.
Marshall studied the saxophone tunes and sounds of Stanley Turrentine, Charlie Parker, Eddie Harris, Junior Walker and Grover Washington , Jr. which you can hear in his playing. This was a time that Marshall also honed his skills as a vocalist emulating artists such as Joe Williams, Arthur Prysock, Junior Walker of the Allstars.
Marshall was drafted into the U.S, Army and was stationed in Germany where he performed with an R&B band with Gis and Germans.
After completing his tour in the military he attended West Virginia State College where he continued to play music with local groups and earn a BA degree in Sociology and Philosophy.
In 1992 Marshall went on the road with The Boss Of The B3 Hammond Organ, the late Winston Walls (October 17, 1943 - February 8, 2008). They traveled to Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, California and finally Florida where they stayed until Winston's semi-retirement. His first recording was with Winston Walls performing at West Virginias' Public Radio Broadcast of Voices hosted by Bob Thompson. The Tune Rock Candy was written by B-3 Organist Jack McDuff and can be found on the Blue Plate Label.
In 2003 Marshall returned to Charleston where he formed The Marshall Petty Groove Band. This unit consist of a Roland XP 80 workstation and Marshall on saxophone. They have played for Presidential candidate John Kerry's presidential announcement, the reception of Barack Obama, wedding receptions, family reunions, birthdays and club venues in the Tri-State area.
Marshall makes his home in Boca Raton, Florida. He continues to perform with other artist throughout the United States.
Marshall believes in the music that he performs. There are two things that he has learned in this music industry that keeps him focused, one is that when music is no longer fun, then it becomes a job and that most of all no matter how well you perform, people like to be entertained.
